Temporary Insanity
I was doing a freelance temporary job with a company who had 12 employees quit in a two week time
period. I was called and asked if I could manage the phones and mail until they could hire other people
(it was only myself and the director there - everyone else had quit). I sounded like a great job for me
so I agreed to do it as long as they understood that I was a temp and would leave AS SOON AS THEY FOUND
A REPLACEMENT.
Well I set to work organizing, cleaning and doing many of the jobs of the people that had left.
I worked many evenings and weekends trying to get the office (which was a real mess) in order. Finally
the director started hiring staff and I didn't have much to do other then answer the phone and open
the mail. I had done my job and had done a really great job. I was excited thinking that this would
lead to other companies finding out about me and a terrific reference.
Finally the day came where I talked to the director and told him that really I needed to move
on since this was a temp job and he really didn't seem to need me anymore. I thought this was a GOOD
thing for both him and myself. But no he was very upset. He paced around his office telling me that
he thought we were a "team" and how could I leave him when he needed me, etc. Finally I said "fine,"
I will stay a bit longer until you really hire someone for this position (though I never really
knew what it was). I agreed to stay and that seemed to make him happy. I then reminded him that
I WAS A TEMP ONLY not an employee.
A month later he had not ever tried to fill the position and I really did have to leave, I
had another job coming up, my wedding and my honeymoon. I explained it to him and that is when
he hit the roof. He again started telling me that I was part of their "team," etc. When I said
"No, I really have to leave." That is when he started slamming doors, breaking things, throwing
things and telling the other employees that I had betrayed him. I ended up crying in the bathroom
on several occasions!!
Finally I did leave. I wasn't given a party or even a card. The only thing the director said
was that the company would have folded without me and that in the future he wouldn't be hiring
temps since they had a problem with committing to finish a job!!
I still see the director when I work for other companies in the same business. He always
looks sad when he says hello to me.
